Accessibility Statement

[Name of Institution / Operator] is committed to making its websites and mobile applications accessible in accordance with Section 10 (1) of the State Disability Equality Act of Baden-Württemberg (Landes-Behindertengleichstellungsgesetz – L-BGG) and the Accessible Information Technology Ordinance (Barrierefreie-Informationstechnik-Verordnung – BITV 2.0) implementing Directive (EU) 2016/2102.

This accessibility statement applies to the Climate Dashboard web application of Heidelberg University.

Compliance Status

This web application is [fully / largely / not] compliant with Section 10 (1) L-BGG in conjunction with BITV 2.0 (corresponding to standard EN 301 549 and WCAG 2.1 Level AA).

Non-Accessible Content

Despite our ongoing efforts to ensure complete accessibility, certain features and visualizations are currently not fully accessible due to technical constraints:

1. Interactive Campus Map View (WebGL / MapLibre Canvas)

  • Description of barrier: The graphical 2D campus map is dynamically rendered using a WebGL canvas. Pixel and vector elements drawn directly on the canvas surface cannot be parsed natively by screen readers as structural HTML elements.
  • Accessible alternative: All rendered university buildings, campus areas, and associated consumption data can be discovered and accessed directly via the keyboard-operable search bar (navigable using ↑ / ↓ / Enter). Selecting a building presents all energy and consumption metrics as structured semantic text cards within the bottom detail panel.

2. Time-Series and Consumption Diagrams (SVG Visualizations)

  • Description of barrier: Interactive consumption and emissions charts represent temporal trends visually. Distinguishing subtle curve movements may be difficult for users with visual impairments.
  • Accessible alternative: All charts include accessibility attributes (role="img" with descriptive label text). Summary consumption figures, physical units, building area normalized metrics, and year-over-year comparison values are additionally provided as screen-reader-readable textual data cards and status elements.

Preparation of this Accessibility Statement

This statement was prepared during application development and last reviewed on [Date of review, e.g. August 23, 2026].

The assessment is based on [a self-assessment / a third-party audit] combining automated testing tools (axe-core) with manual keyboard navigation and screen reader audits for components and ARIA annotations.
